    Your Puppies Weight

    in New Puppy Owner

We do field several questions regarding what a puppy should weigh at a certain age and how much it should be fed at each feeding? Feeding is actually dependent on your pups activity level and sex. If your pup is starting to look overly chubby or to skinny adjust its food amounts in 0.25 cup amounts until you find the sweet spot, but remember this is going to keep changing until they reach a year old at which point you should be somewhere near 2 cups of food per meal.

    Female English Labradors

    • @ 3 months: roughly 21 - 26 lbs. Feeding a min of 2 cups per day unless its overly chubby or skinny, once again its dependent on activity level

    • @6 months: roughly 39 - 49 lb's. Feeding a min of 1.5 cups per meal twice a day unless its overly chubby or skinny, once again its dependent on activity level

    • @1 year: somewhere between 50 and 68 lb's though I would shoot for 60 - 65 lb area. The dog should be eating about 2 cups per meal depending on its body type and if its overly chubby or skinny, once again its dependent on activity level

    Male English Labradors

    • @ 3 months: roughly 24 - 29 lb's Feeding a min of 1 cup per meal unless its overly chubby or skinny, once again its dependent on activity level

    • @ 6 months: roughly 45 - 54 lb's Feeding a min of 1.5 cups per meal unless its overly chubby or skinny, once again its dependent on activity level

    • @ 1 Year: somewhere between 60 and 80 lb's though I would be shooting for the 68 to 75 lb area. The dog should be consuming at least 2 cups per meal if relatively active.

At around 1 year of age if your finding your pup is chubby I would recommend increasing its activity level. If this is not possible, then change it from puppy food to an adult formula like Victor Multi-Pro. Normally I think its best to run a puppy food until they are 2 years old but that is not always possible. If your pup is still to skinny due to activity level you may want to switch up to a higher protein low carbohydrate dog food.

@Bear Bones Labradors We recommend Victor dog food products because we like the quality and composition their products. I know some breeders require you to buy a certain brand but we do not, but we do recommend Victor dog food if its available in your area.We am not saying Victor is the only brand, but we are very satisfied with its products.

Note: Victor Pet Food does not pay us or provide any compensation or discount for this promotion of their products. This is our true and honest recommendation.

The full line of Victor Products are available on their web page here. Also Victor dog foods all have L-Carnitine in them, which is basically used to transport fatty acids essential for energy production. A short article on the benefits of L-Carnitine @ dogcertified.com can be found here.

Our puppies are started on Victor Hi-Pro Plus once they a weened from their mother. We also feed this to our females when they are pregnant.

Our Adults both male and non pregnant females use Victor Multi-Pro. Our dogs are moderately active and seem to do well on this mixture, plus it comes in 50 lb bags so it lasts a little longer.

Victor does make a Professional dog food for breeders, but our activity level does not support the extra protein and fat the food provides and we wanted higher protein and fat levels for our pups and pregnant females. This Victor mix falls between the two we use and we recommend it if your at moderate or higher exercise levels and feeding more than 2.5 cups of the Multi-Pro per meal to maintain weight. Switching to this one will allow you to feed lower quantities and still maintain weight and energy levels needed for your young adult Labs.
